Within blocks of Shadyside Commons are local playgrounds lined with trees and plenty of space to sit and relax. Wightman Playground, which is in the midst of a massive renovation project will feature a state-of-the-art play equipment. Another local favorite is Dan Cohen Playground, which features everything from swing sets to slides and a handicap accessible playground. You can lay out a blanket on the grass or picnic in the pavilion across the street.

Schenley Park

It’s not hard to escape the urban feel in the Steel City and find an escape in more than 450 acres of trails and attractions at Schenley Park. Just a 10-minute drive away from Shadyside Commons and named one of “America’s Coolest City Parks,” Schenley is home to Phipps Conservatory, an eye-opening botanical garden, and Bob O’Connor Golf Course. Schenley Oval Sportsplex is also a popular spot to play summer sports or ice skate in the winter. 

Mellon Park

Situated along both sides of Fifth Avenue is the expansive Mellon Park. Known for its beautiful Walled Garden and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, this historic public space is a must-see when you live in the Shadyside neighborhood. Pittsburgh residents frequently visit Mellon Park to attend one of the many events that are hosted year round.

Indoor Entertainment

One of the nation’s top natural-history museums, Carnegie Museum of Natural History features dinosaur fossils, interactive science classes, and much more. Those with an eye for history will also appreciate touring the many sites in the Murray Hill Avenue Historic District, with dozens of historic homes and other buildings that tell the tale of Pittsburgh’s past.
