Apartments Near Mellon Park

One of Pittsburgh’s historic green spaces is conveniently located just minutes from Shadyside Commons. Mellon Park, established in 1943, was once part of the estate of Richard B. Mellon, owner of the largest mansion in the city. In 1929, Mellon hired landscape architects Vitale and Geiffert to develop the Walled Garden of his estate grounds. When the Mellon Mansion was felled during World War II, most of its original gardens – including the Walled Garden – remained. These gardens were then turned into what is now known as Mellon Park. Today, the Walled Garden is surrounded by brick and limestone walls, one of which is of Gothic design. The garden’s fourth wall was part of the original Mellon mansion. This section of Mellon Park is also home to a fountain that was part of Vitale and Geiffert’s original design.

In 2009, the park underwent a renovation that added seating, repaired infrastructure, and revived plantings. In addition, an interactive “starts” art exhibition was installed. Today, a variety of events are hosted at the park throughout the year. One historic event held each year is A Fair in the Park. Held by the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh, this event began in 1969 and welcomes the community out each September to enjoy art, food, music, children’s activities, and more.
